Practice, practice and more practice.
Also, it would be helpful if you try to learn each weapons' pros and cons.
For example;
Sniper Rifle
>Good for long distance and high power
>Bad fire rate
Flamethrower
>Good for toasting players to crisp
>Hinders movement
Plasma rifle
>Good if double wield, Good shield buster
>Overheats if use too long…
If you manage to learn the pros and cons of each weapon and learn how to use them in multiplayer, I'm sure you can kick their ass…..

Play, Play, and Play some more. Also play a lot of ranked matches and beginning play lists.

1.) Always follow with a pack of your team
2.) Never fight with the weapon you are spawned with.
3.) Don't be the first guy on the battlefield fighting, stay behind those people and snatch their kills
Those 3 things always help me when I am playing.

i've only played halo 3 a couple of times at my friends house. but what we did for halo 2 should still ring true. if you wanna get good, play a lot!!! for halo 2, they maps are the same for online and multi-player at home. play against your friends. and use the features that limit your choices of weapons so that you get good at those weapons and move on. try to find what combination works best for you. my favorites were the shotgun and sniper rifle. and sticky bombs.
it also helps to play the actual single or co-op player game because u get a feel for how each character moves. play it on modes. and beat the game each time.
for actual online, if u expect to get good there, also expect to die a lot. its not easy to get better while playing online because most of the people play so much and are gunning to kill people that dont know what they are doing.
so make sure u know each weapon and its limits. meaning how long can u shoot the weapon before it runs out of ammo. does it run out of ammo. does it over heat. does it need a charge time to be effective.. grenades: do they just blow up on contact. how many seconds until they blow up.. how much damage does each weapon do. how many shots would it take to kill someone with a particular weapon. how many shots to kill if that person has armor on.
these and other questions you should figure out when u play offline because they'll come in handy when you do finally sit down to play a game online.
just remember to keep playing.. and when you think you're ready, test your mettle against the lists and rankings online.

Well as everyone says practice, practice, and practice.
But here are some tips.
1. Know what weapons you are good with.
2. Know your map.
3. And never walk straight. Easier target to hie by a sniper.
4. When in doubt. STICK. You always should stick if you are about to die. You either end up tying the game Or even survive the blast.

Yeah. Play Call of Duty 4. I'm serious. I sucked at Halo, played COD4, then came back and was awesome at Halo. Call of Duty 4 fixes everything in fact. Call of Duty 4 has improved my grades, made me a better cook, repaired my credit and helps me have a more open and communicative relationship with my wife. You must own it.
