Sure, you can practice each and every weapon until you're blue in the face. Yes, you should learn all the guns, but there is a lot more to it than guns:

Maps!

Learn every inch of each of the maps. Find out where every single weapon is located on each map. Plan escape paths, find dark corners and high ground to hide and/or snipe.

Vehicles!

Drive all the vehicles and find out the strengths and weaknesses. And how to destroy them when they're attacking you!

Research!

Lol I am pretty good at the game All I do is just rush in and I get first place 4/5 of the time. Whatever you do if you do not have a gun but the assault rifle try to get in point-blank range at all times. Cause that rifle will not do any damage but get there shield down from a medium range away.

In that game the melee is cool so what I would do is shoot melee and finish them off with a few bursts.

PLAY. All there is to do is practice. I don't really need practice that much cuz I'm kind of a veteran, but that's how I got to my level. Plus all my friends are natural gamers, so I was constantly being pushed to get better. That's how our group works, as one got better, the others worked harder to surpass, and we kept reaching new potentials. I would say play with good people, but don't be annoying. If they don't want to play with you, just leave them alone. Halo 3 is mostly about reflex for me. I have learned to instinctively react to any situation to get the kill(although I do die occasionally). The gameplay is relatively basic, not very hard to catch on, just hard to "run with the big boys".

Play, play and play some more. Practice is the only thing that will help.

Keep moving. Unless you're crouch walking and sneaking around, always stay on the move. A stationary target is a dead target.

When sniping, don't so much aim laterally by moving the right thumb stick, but rather aim using more of the left thumb stick. Therefore, you're aiming to snipe someone and making yourself a moving target at the same time.

If you have the shotgun, fire at the person and Immediately melee after you fire. This will take care of anybody that doesn't die from the initial shot.

If possible, always aim for your opponents head. It will be hard at first, but it will begin to get easier and you'll win a lot more battles that way.

Those are just a few tips. You really just need to play as much as possible to get better.

well i my case im pretty handy with an assualt rifle. so i always like to keep that as a secondary weapon. im garbage at sniping so i usually go for a b/r with my ranged attacks. as for close combat ive had more luck with the sword than the shotty(if there isnt any sword or shotty a mauler is a decent second option combined with a well timed melee. the sparan laser in my opinion is a either your good with it or your not weapon.rockets are fun too. the pink mist(needler) can be a lethal weapon if used right plasma and spike grenades can be life savers with a properly placed stick.

as for tactics all i can really say is know ur maps inside and out and expect the unexpected.

Become friends with someone who's 50X better than you, play custom and campaign with him/her learn some of their tactics, weapon choices, and fighting styles. practice aiming and sticking on a second player that you control. If you want to play a few practice rounds or just play here's my "Tag"
